With great transportation links and some of the city’s best shopping, the area has seen lots of new development and investment in recent years. Mission Valley is home to many young families and has one of the city’s most highly educated populations.
Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Fashion Valley is the largest shopping mall in San Diego and one of the biggest in California. This upscale open-air retail destination features more than 200 tenants anchored by Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom department stores. Other retailers include premium fashion brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, and Salvatore Ferragamo. Fashion Valley also has a wide variety of restaurants, from familiar favorites like
California Pizza Kitchen and
P.F. Chang’s to trendy spots such as
North Italia and
True Food Kitchen. To Fashion Valley’s immediate east,
Westfield Mission Valley is another open-air hub of restaurants and retailers. Westfield has close to 80 businesses anchored by Bloomingdale’s Outlet Store, Bed Bath and Beyond, Macy’s Home & Furniture Store, Michaels, Nordstrom Rack, Target, and an AMC movie theater. The adjacent
Hazard Center offers more shopping and dining. Popular businesses here include
BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse for deep dish Chicago pizza and microbrews,
Intermezzo Espresso Café for gourmet coffee and delicious baked goods,
Smashburger for handcrafted 100% certified Angus beef burgers, and
UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas for the latest movie screenings. The area surrounding these three malls also features big-box retailers such as
Designer Shoe Warehouse,
Marshalls,
Old Navy,
Trader Joe’s, and
West Elm. Mission Valley is within a few minutes’ drive of
Old Town, where you’ll find many boutiques, galleries, and authentic Mexican cantinas.
Things to Do
The final development phase of Mission Valley’s sprawling 14.3-acre
Civita Park was completed in August 2020. This massive development project has transformed a former quarry into one of San Diego’s largest public parks. Amenities and attractions at Civita Park include a civic plaza with an outdoor amphitheater for events, sports fields and courts, two playgrounds with rock climbing walls and rope bridges, a splash pad and interactive water feature, beautiful gardens, and a dramatic 60-foot seasonal waterfall. Residents also enjoy access to the
San Diego River Trail, which runs for six miles between Mission Valley’s shopping centers to Ocean Beach.
Riverwalk Golf Club offers an 18-hole public golf course with stunning views and attractive water features. Founded in 1769,
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala is the oldest mission in California. The original mission church was destroyed in the 1770s but was replaced by the current church in the early 19th century. The mission is a National Register Historic Landmark with guided tours available.
